IRIM’s mission is to create new and exciting opportunities for faculty collaboration; educate the next generation of robotics experts, entrepreneurs, and academic leaders; and partner with industry and government to pursue truly transformative robotics research.
Georgia Tech offers the first interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in robotics, an undergraduate summer program for underrepresented minorities, and a traineeship program in healthcare robotics.
The depth and breadth of IRIM breaks through disciplinary boundaries and allows for transformative research that transitions from theory to robustly deployed systems featuring next-generation robots.
Established as part of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Summer Undergraduate Research in Engineering (SURE) grant, the SURE Robotics Program adds a robotics component to Georgia Tech’s SURE Program, established in 1992.
Launched in May 2014, and funded with co-support from the Department of Defense and NSF’s Division of Engineering Education and Centers, the program supports undergraduate students in an immersive, ten-week summer robotics research experience designed to attract qualified underrepresented students into graduate school in the fields of engineering and science.
Professor and Linda J. and Mark C. Smith Chair Ayanna Howard and School of Electrical and Computer Engineering Outreach Director Leyla Conrad lead the program.
This program is supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) REU Site: Summer Undergraduate Research in Engineering (SURE) (1757401).
